About COP
- Supreme governing body of an international convention treaty.
- It is composed of representatives of the member states of the convention and accredited observers.
- It take place every year.
- The first COP meeting was held in 1995 in Berlin, Germany.
- Till present 27 COP meetings held some of which are as follows –
- COP 24 – Katowice, Poland – 2018.
- COP 25 – Madrid, Spain – 2019.
- COP 26 – Glasgow, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland – 2021.
- COP 27 – Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt – 2022.
- COP 28 – Dubai, United Arab Emirates – 2023.
- And currently, COP 29 is going to be hosted by Azerbaijan.
- India hosted 11th Conference of the Parties (CoP-11) to the CBD in Hyderabad on 1-19 October, 2012.
Scope of COP
- Scope of the COP is to review the “implementation of the Convention and any other legal instruments that the COP adopts and take decisions necessary to promote the effective implementation of the Convention”.
Members of COP
- The 197 countries that have ratified the Convention are called Parties to the Convention.

- COP 29 Edition –
- The annual climate conference to be held in Azerbaijan in November will lay particular stress on “peace” and “truce” to enable countries to focus on climate solution amid ongoing conflicts.
- 29th edition of the Conference of Parties (COP) — as the climate conference is called — is set to further agenda points decided in the 28th edition in Dubai such as a firm commitment to “transition away from the use of fossil fuels…in a just, orderly and equitable manner, and accelerating action in this critical decade, to achieve net zero by 2050.”
- Most countries have agreed on the urgency of the problem and the need to keep temperatures from rising 1.5C above pre-industrial levels by the end of century.
- A long-standing criticism and a matter of deep division between developed and developing countries is that a 2009 commitment by developed countries to mobilise $100 billion a year between 2020 and 2025 for developing countries has only been partially realised. A major item that is expected to be firmed up in 2024 is to decide a new annual target above $100 billion and agreement on whether these will be in the form of grants or loans.
