National Handloom Day

National Handloom Day (NHD) is celebrated every year on 7th August. This was Indian government’s decision to initiate National Handloom Day in 2015.

  • This Day marks the anniversary of the Swadeshi Movement’s formal launch in Kolkata in 1905.
    • This movement, emphasizing self-reliance and indigenous craftsmanship, played a pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle.
  • During the colonial era, handlooms became a powerful symbol of resistance against British rule.
    • By promoting Indian crafts and empowering local artisans, the handloom sector became intrinsically linked with the nation’s quest for independence.

  • Handloom is the second-largest employment provider after agriculture. The 2019-20 Handloom Census reported 35.22 lakh handloom workers nationwide.
  • Women constitute 72% of the workforce, with 25.46 lakh female artisans.
  • The Handloom sector contributes approximately 14% to industrial production and 4% to GDP.
  • Handloom exports reached $1802.36 million in the 2023-24 fiscal year.

  • They represent the country’s diverse regional identities.
  • Traditional techniques and patterns are preserved through generational knowledge transfer.
  • Iconic products like Banarasi silk saris and Pashmina shawls showcase India’s craftsmanship.
