NITI Aayog is nodal agency under the Government of India which has a pivotal role in country’s development process. It serves as the apex public policy think tank. The chairman of NITI Aayog is Prime Minister. The word ‘NITI’ means policy. Read more about it below.

About NITI Aayog

  • Stands for National Institution for Transforming India.
  • Established in 2015, by the NDA government.
  • Main Focus for the establishment – To replace the Planning Commission which followed a top-down model.
  • The first meeting was chaired by Narendra Modi on 8 February 2015.
  • It is Country’s premier policy-making institution.
  • NITI Aayog’s creation has two hubs
    • Team India which leads to the participation of Indian states with the union government.
    • The Knowledge and Innovation Hub which builds the institution’s think tank capabilities.
  • Its council comprises of all the state Chief Ministers, along with the Chief Ministers of Delhi and Puducherry, Lieutenant Governors of all UTs, and a vice-chairman nominated by the Prime Minister.
